Fazenda Riacho das Varas was funded in 1975 in Diamantina, Chapada de Minas. While the area was not recognised as an agricultural land at the time, Ricardo Hirofumi’s parents were convinced that they could produce high quality coffee there. Through hard work and dedication, they proved wrong and were followed by many coffee farmers. Nowadays, Chapada de Minas is getting more and more exposure as its smallholder farmers are focusing on producing high quality coffees. The region received its first plantings in the 1970s, when frost and cold impacted plantations in the state’s south, as well as in So Paulo and Paraná. It is located in Vale do Jequitinhonha, in the northeast of Minas Gerais. It is well-known for its natural beauty and cultural diversity, as well as for the great coffees it produces today.
